- Comment on GEnie:
-
- John, there are some known problems in attempting to run System 6.0 on 512Ke's
- and earlier Macs because of the size of the PRAM area. With the introduction
- of the Mac Plus Apple enlarged this area over what's allocated in the previous
- Macs but up until System 6.0 didn't use any of the additional area. Now they
- are which is causing problems when System 6.0 is installed on 512Ke or earlier
- machines even if the memory's been increased via 3rd party upgrade boards. The
- known problem and supected areas when using System 6.0 on 512Ke or earlier
- Macs are:
-
- Use of the Sound Manager to select an alternate sound to replace the "beep".
-
- The ability to store these changes in the PRAM area since it's smaller on the
- 512e and earlier Macs.
-
- Alternate connection methods for AppleTalk such as asynchronous AppleTalk.
-
- A very definite suspicion that the new serial drivers are affected, too.
-
-
- These are the areas most mentioned but there could be more that folks haven't
- stumbled across. Bottom line appears to be having increased memory equal to or
- above that of a Mac Plus isn't the only factor coming into play. It goes a lot
- "deeper" than that.
-
- .I think I can safely guarantee that System v6.x will not be modified to
- accomodate 512K Macs, even if they have had additional memory installed. Apple
- seems pretty adamant on this point.
-
- In particular, System v6.0 no longer has patches for the differences in the
- serial port chips on 512K's and 512Ke's (the same chip that holds the PRAM
- memory). It *may* be possible for a programmer to install some special code
- that would overcome this problem, but I haven't checked this out thoroughly
- enough to say more than that.
-
- Since you have the additional memory, I sympathize with you. System v6.0 has a
- much-improved version of MultiFinder. However, for most people, that is it's
- only significant advantage. Ergo, I would say that unless you have had
- problems with the older incarnations of MultiFinder, you will be best off
- sticking with System v4.2 or v4.3. They are reasonably free of bugs, contain
- new code that should handle the vast majority of programs available, and it
- supports your current hardware.
-
- If you're a programmer-type, drop me a GEnie Mail and I'll outline my thoughts
- for a serial port fix.
-
- Good luck!
